Visiting "La Isla Bonita"by Amaru & Suzanne, December 30th 2008

Belize it or not, here we are....

We started our morning in New York, caught our first flight at 3.20am, changed planes in San Salvador and finally arrived in Belize City. Here we had two options... Either we took a taxi to the dock and then a water taxi to the island or we just pay a little bit extra and fly for 15min to the island of San Pedro.

It didn't take too much to convince Suz to fly, and this way we also got some awesome aerial views of the reef on the way there.

When we arrived in San Pedro and found our hotel, it was still a little bit too early to check in so it became beer o'clock (even though it was still breakfast time we had been up for around 30 hours and deserved our cold local beers). Once we checked in we dropped our stuffed and went off exploring.

The island is very relaxed and it was a great place to unwind and finally feel the warmth again after our week in New Jersey...

On our first day we didn't really do anything, we were tired but had decided that we should stay awake so we wouldn't miss anything. We spent that day walking along the beach, stopping at a few bars here and there along the way. That evening we found a great Jamaican restaurant where we both had great seafood meals, I splurged on Lobsters =)

The next day we rented a golf cart (the main form of transport on the island) and it was a blast driving around on it. We drove north first, over the bridge, for as long as the road let us and here we found a great spot which was almost empty of tourists.

The best part about this area was the beach bar, it's the best one we've seen yet.... it was quite nice to be there just the two of us!

Later on that afternoon we drove down south since we had been told that there was a Crocodile feeding exibition that apparently was great to watch. But, we were told that the Crocodile eventually grew too large and had to be removed from the area.... where he went, we don't know.

After returning the golf cart we wanted a snack so we managed to find some buffalo wings (well, Suz actually did). During our snack which were some of the best wings we've ever had (big call) we realized that we were still on New Jersey time while Belize and the rest of Central America were an hour behind. No wonder that at the previous nights dinner there was almost no one at the restaurant at 6pm (it was actually 5pm), we felt a bit silly.... but hey, we're on holidays, who cares!

During our few days here I was wondering if I should do a few dives, but after a bit of research I found out that it would be cheaper and easier to do it once we reached our next destination so I let it pass this time...

We relaxed on our last night, had a great seafood dinner and just strolled the streets of the town looking for a place that might serve us some Caye Lime Pie (unfortunately this time we were too late and didn't get any).

San Pedro was nice and relaxed with a very strong caribbean influence but the the next morning it was time to move on to the next island, next stop Caye Caulker...
